About Eixample Izquierdo
The Ensanche Izquierdo, or in Catalan, “Eixample Esquerra” literally means the left part of the “Ensanche”, which means “Expanse” or “Extension”. This is the most densely populated part of Barcelona with around 35 thousand people per square kilometre. This along with the central, well-planned location means Eixample Izquierdo real estate is possibly the most sought area in the city after or along with property in Zona Alta or Pedralbes.
Eixample is the result ofplans carried out in the mid 19th Century to allow a more structured city in comparison to the previous medieval urban sprawl. The need for a new area in which to expand from the old city down by the sea was becoming increasingly necessary. There was some contention in the awarding of the project given that the plan approved by the Barcelona town hall was given to the architect Rovira i Trias who wished for a more segregated city where the borgeous would be more comfortable and not have to mix with the lower classes. However the central government in Madrid rejected this idea and ordered that the grid system of the Eixample put forward by ldefonso Cerdá be put in place.
The left side of the Eixample is the area to the left of Passeig de Gràcia. Passeig de Gràcia is considered to be the backbone of the Eixample real estate. Eixample Izquierdo was built after Eixample Derecho and is the area between Diagonal at the top, Passeig de Gràcia and Gran Via to the bottom. Eixample Izquirdo extends to the left right up to Plaza de España, where the Mont Juic entrance to the Fira Exhibition area, the magic fountains and the palace lie.
For those looking to buy real estate in Eixample Izquierdo, you are truly spoilt with choice! Prices can vary quite a lot given the huge variety of sizes, types and also general condition of real estate. It is common to find apartments for 3000 Euros/ m2 next to buildings where the prices are closer to 5,500 Euros / m2. So much for location, location, location!
Typical real estate Eixample Izquierdo comprises of gloriously high ceilings, mosaic flooring and floor to ceiling wooden shutters. Despite many needing major refurbishment, it is a great investment with a guaranteed significant return.
